Anti-Wrinkle Advice & Information

What is being injected?

Botulinum Toxin may be branded Azzalure, Botox or Bocouture is a purified protein produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. The product causes muscle relaxation and supresses sweating for 2- 6 months on average (with wide variation between individuals) by temporarily disrupting nerve activity to muscles and sweat glands. I understand that often treatments are given off label, as licensed use for prescribed treatments listed do not include most areas of available treatment.

What are the Side effects and Risks?

• Transient headache, swelling, bruising, bleeding, pain, twitching, itching, puffiness/oedema around the eyes or numbness or other changes in sensation

• Allergy including anaphylaxis is possible but very rare

• Asymmetry (unevenness)

• Temporary drooping of facial features

• Dry eyes

• Double or blurred vision

• The theoretical risk of complications unique to certain individuals are so far unknown.

Pleaae disclose an accurate medical and drug history as many medications increase the risk of bruising and include but are not limited to Vitamin E, Aspirin, Motrin, Clopidogrel, Warfarin and others.

Limitations and alternatives: Occasionally the treatment wears off very quickly or does not work at all. Botulinum Toxin is best at treating dynamic facial lines; those caused by facial muscle activity. Lines present at rest may or may not improve and can be unpredictable.

There are alternatives to consider before undertaking this treatment and these include topical creams, chemical peels, laser treatments, surgical denervation, forehead/brow lift, facelift, or hyaluronic acid treatments.

Follow-up: An optional free adjustment is available for 2 weeks after my first treatment, but thereafter may incur a charge.

Dissatisfaction: With all treatments the actual degree of improvement cannot be predicted or guaranteed. The outcome’s subjective nature means dissatisfaction is a possible outcome regardless of effectiveness of treatment. The effect of all treatments may gradually wear off and additional treatments may be necessary to maintain the desired effect.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • A known hypersensitivity to Botulinum Toxin type A or to any of its excipients e.g. human albumin, and sodium chloride.
  • Neuromuscular disorders such as Myathenia Gravis or Eaton Lambert Syndrome.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Co-treatment with Amino-glycoside antibiotics, or medical products which interfere with neuromuscular transmission (e.g - tubocurarine - type of muscle relaxant.
  • Under 18 years of age
  • Concurrent use of anticoagulants, aspirin, vitamin E, chloroquine, calcium antagonists

CAUTIONS

  • Patients on aspirin - this should not be stopped as the risks of withholding the medication outweighs the benefit. An increased risk of bruising may be a result due to the effect of the blood thinners.
  • Patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or with peripheral neuromuscular disorders.

AFTERCARE

Aftercare & Advice: Azzalure/Botox/ Bocouture

Treatments take 14 days to fully work, and last up to 3-4 months on average and the process is not linear.

WHAT’S NORMAL AFTER A PROCEDURE?

Injections can cause small amounts of swelling, a temporary bump, redness, bruising, a mild

to moderate headache, and sensations such as tingling or mild itching after the treatments.

These effects are so common they can be considered a normal part of the process.

The initial effects will show in the first 2-5 days. Peak effect on the muscle is at 14 days, but

the result will continue to improve for 4 weeks or more. The benefits start to wear off up to

3-4 months on average but this is varies between individuals.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR RESULT & REDUCE SIDE EFFECTS

- Remain upright for 2 hours.

- Do small extra contractions of the muscles treated every 20 minutes for the first hour.

- When cleansing, avoid pressure and use gentle strokes away from the eyes.

- Avoid facial massages or electrical stimulation of the face for the next 2 weeks.

- Avoid wearing tight caps or garments in the area that has been injected.

- Avoid alcohol and exposure to UV and extreme heat i.e. sauna, steam, sun beds, very

hot showers, strenuous exercise etc

REDUCE THE CHANCE OF INFECTION:

- Do not apply make-up for approximately 6 hours unless it is mineral based.

- Wash your hands immediately post procedure

- Do not touch your face in the areas injected for 6 hours.

Contact the clinic….

- If you develop a side effect, such as a dry eye, droopy eyelid, heavy brow.

- Any other side effects you think are important.

- If you feel distressed or worried in any way.

- Routine adjustments are optional and will be offered free of charge around 14 days after your procedure.
